It seems that there are always questions in the fall about winterizing plastic ponds.
To begin with, clean out all the gunk (composed of fish and plant waste) at the bottom of the pond.
Specialist garden catalogues have a little gizmo that attaches to a hose and when the hose is run, the gizmo acts like a vacuum cleaner, sucking debris from the bottom of the pond.
Or you can put your pump on the pond bottom and point the discharge into the garden.
If you don?t remove the plant debris, it will continue to decompose.
Decomposition uses oxygen as one of its primary fuels and this means that oxygen will be taken from the water to fuel plant decomposition.
If there is an ice-layer over the pond, and there will be shortly, the water will not be able to replace that oxygen and the pond will go into an anaerobic (without oxygen) state under the ice.
Now, you?ve never quite smelled something until you?ve taken a whiff of a pond that?s in that state.
It is basically your very own backyard sewage system.
Aside from getting rid of the smell, the reason you remove the bottom layers of material is so any fish you?re leaving in the pond will have enough oxygen to survive the winter.
And survive they will as long as you stop feeding them when the water temperature is less than 50F.
At that temperature, it is really too cold for them to feed and any food will simply rot.
The fish will survive as long as the water doesn?t freeze solidly to the bottom of the pond.
If the pond is three to four feet deep, it will not freeze and your fish will be fine.
Shallower ponds will either have to have a bubbler, a pump left running to keep an open area open or the fish removed to an aquarium for the winter. But start with removing the gunk.

How to Cope with Colic
by: Monica Faircloth
When my oldest daughter was born, I walked the floor night and day, rocking and swaddling, singing and even crying...anything to make my new little miracle stop her endless crying. Well, everyone told me she just had colic and that it would pass. And, alas, pass it did, however I wish that I would have known then what I know now.
There are many theories about the causes of colic. Many believe that it is breastfeeding that causes it. "Either you are eating something that is not suited to her little tummy or you must be feeding her too much.." they will tell you. Well, maybe. Others believe that bottle fed babies are allergic to the formula. "Switch his formula and he will be just fine..." they will tell you. Well, yes that could be it too. Some will say it is gas or an immature nervous system. Maybe. And the list goes on and on.
However, I believe that the answer to solving colic problems is simple....

Dealing With Colic Without Losing Your Mind
by: Sarah Veda
For a brand new mommy, or even a seasoned one, dealing with a colicky baby can be overwhelming. The constant crying is heartbreaking and nerve wracking, and leaves you with a sense of helplessness. But don?t lose heart; the only good thing I can tell you about colic is that it?s temporary. Here are a few ideas to keep you going.
First ? Be sure it?s really colic. If you haven?t had the little one checked out by a doctor, do so. Sometimes what?s written off as colic is really a milk allergy or some other true gastric disorder, like acid reflux. If the baby is on formula, you should ask if making a change in brand might help.
Secondly, get help! If you have to deal with the colicky symptoms all by yourself every day, you?re bound to go nuts. Swap off with your spouse, another family member or a friend. My daughter had colic for the two longest weeks of my life, and it began every...

Three Excellent Ways To Turbo Charge Your Sales Presentations
by: Kyle Varner
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have helped many salesmen go from average to excellent. Sales is all about the subconscious mind. When I was in high school, I sold Kirby vacuum cleaners door to door, and I noticed something very interesting: everyone had the same basic sales presentation, and yet some of us (like me!) were making excellent money, and others were making next to nothing. What is the difference?
The Devil is in the Details
The details of our sales presentations were the only things that differed?and sometimes those details are minute?even undetectable. They might occur on the subconscious level or the salesman, or they might be things that the salesman consciously does in order to influence the subconscious mind of their prospective client. The point is that, if you have a proven sales presentation, the difference between being excellent and being...
